Papercutting has evolved in many ways over time and it is a beautiful and unique way to interpret the world around us. The art of papercutting originated in China, where paper was first invented. Over time, the art form dispersed to Japan and then throughout Europe. Commonly known as “Scherenschnitte” (the German word for scissors cutting), papercutting is an ancient art form that continues to intrigue all who set eyes on it.
An original papercutting is a design that is cut by hand by the artist who created it. The cuttings can be done with a variety of different scissors and/or knives. Symmetrical designs can be folded once or many times before cutting, and asymmetrical designs are not folded.
